Tajweed Rules for Beginners, Explained Simply

Nov 1, 20264 min read

Quick answer: Tajweed gives Quranic letters their correct pronunciation and qualities. Beginners should start with articulation, then practise common rules such as Noon and Meem Sakinah, Madd, Qalqalah and stopping. A written guide introduces the ideas; a teacher checks the sound.

The names may feel unfamiliar at first. You do not need to master every term before reading your first corrected word. Think of this guide as a map, not a substitute for hearing and practising the recitation.

What are Makharij and Sifaat?

Makharij are articulation points: where letters are produced. Sifaat are their qualities. Similar-sounding letters can need different tongue or throat positions. Ask your teacher to demonstrate the difference and listen as you repeat it.

What happens with Noon Sakinah and Tanween?

Their pronunciation depends on the following letter. The main categories are Izhar (clear pronunciation), Idgham (merging), Iqlab (conversion before baa) and Ikhfa (concealment). Learn them with Quranic examples and teacher guidance; descriptions alone do not teach the precise sound.

What about Meem Sakinah?

Its rules include concealment before baa, merging before another meem and clear pronunciation before other letters. Your teacher can show the lip position and nasal sound where applicable.

What are Madd and Qalqalah?

Madd is lengthening certain sounds. The amount depends on the type, so do not lengthen every vowel equally. Qalqalah is a distinct release in the letters qaf, taa, baa, jeem and daal when they are sakin; it should not become an added vowel.

Why do stopping rules matter?

Where you stop and restart can affect meaning and pronunciation. Learn the marks in your mushaf with your teacher rather than stopping only when breath runs out.

What should I practise this week?

Choose one correction from your teacher, revisit a short familiar surah and read slowly. The Tajweed course develops these skills step by step. Request a free trial to find your starting point, or read our adult beginner guide.
