Tajweed literally means to make something beautiful. In the Quran, it is the science of giving every letter its due right — the exact point of articulation, the exact length, the exact quality — so the recitation reaches the ear the way it was revealed.
Start with the makharij, the points of articulation. There are seventeen main outlets in the mouth, throat, and nasal passage. Every Arabic letter belongs to one of them. Master the throat letters first — ح، خ، ع، غ، ق، ه، ء — because most non-Arab tongues struggle here.
Then learn the sifat, the qualities: heavy vs light, echoing vs quiet, whispered vs loud. A letter with the wrong quality is like a musical note played on the wrong instrument.
Listen more than you speak. Play the recitation of a trusted reciter every day. Your ear must learn what correct sounds like before your mouth can imitate it.
Finally, recite to a teacher. Tajweed is a chain of transmission — teacher to student, back to the Prophet ﷺ. It cannot be self-taught from a book alone.
