Raising Children with True Islamic Tarbiyah

May 20, 20267 min read

Tarbiyah is not a subject we teach for an hour on Saturday. It is the air a child breathes at home, the words they hear at the dinner table, and the way we speak of Allah when we think they are not listening.

Begin with love of Allah — not fear alone. Children who first meet Allah as the One who loves them, forgives them, and made the flowers, grow into adults who run toward Him in their storms rather than away from Him.

Make salah a family rhythm, not a punishment. Pray together. Let them see you make wudu carefully, whisper in sujood, and smile after fajr.

Tell them the stories of the Prophets. Yusuf in the well. Musa at the sea. Muhammad ﷺ in the cave of Thawr. These stories build a spine of hope no algorithm can bend.

Protect their innocence, but do not raise them in a bubble. Explain the world honestly, with the Quran as their compass. Better to hear hard truths from a parent's mouth than a stranger's screen.

And du'a. Always du'a. A parent's du'a for their child is answered — do not underestimate a whispered plea after tahajjud for a sleeping face down the hallway.
